November’s general elections are less than a month away, and the urgency could not be greater. The choices voters make will shape our communities, our state, and our nation. At this critical moment, defending democracy and the rule of law begins with each of us exercising our right to vote.
September 2026 Voter Digest
The November elections are less than sixty days away and it is time to make your voting plan. Know the dates, know your options for voting, review what will be on your ballot, and make a plan for when and how you will cast your vote. You can find all the information you need on our nonpartisan platform vote411.org.

Your vote matters, especially now. August brings another important opportunity to make our voices heard. The Primary Election is underway, and I urge every eligible voter in Miami-Dade to vote, make a plan, and encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same.
There is more on the ballot than many voters realize. Depending on where you live and your registration, you may be voting on candidates for Congress, Governor and Cabinet, the Florida Legislature, judges, County Commission, School Board, and other local offices. Some races are partisan, while others are nonpartisan or open to all voters.

This July, our nation marks a historic milestone—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is a time to celebrate the enduring promise of American democracy, while recognizing that every generation has been called upon to protect it. Freedom, representative government, and the right of every citizen to have a voice have never been guaranteed. They have always depended on people willing to stand up, participate, and lead.

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Florida City elections—local races that directly shape daily life, from schools and housing to public safety and accountability. These elections are a powerful reminder that democracy begins locally. At the same time, we are closely awaiting Governor DeSantis’s decision on the election date for House District 113, a race that will give voters a critical opportunity to make their voices heard. Every election, no matter the size, is a chance to strengthen representative government.

As November begins, Miami-Dade enters an important election season. Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 4, 2025, several municipalities across the county will hold local elections, including the City of Miami, Miami Beach, Hialeah, Homestead and Surfside. Voters will select mayors, commissioners and consider proposed charter amendments. These local offices play a crucial role in shaping our neighborhoods, city services, and community priorities—making every vote truly matter.

As we step into 2025, we find ourselves at a confluence of significant events. This month we observe both the inauguration of President Donald Trump and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Now is a time to reflect on Dr. King’s profound impact on our fight for civil rights. Miami holds a special link to Dr. King, as it was here that he first practiced his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, three years before its historic delivery in Washington, D.C. This local connection deepens our community’s ties to his legacy of justice and equality.

As I return to my role as President of the League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County after a brief absence, I am reflective and optimistic about our path forward. This past year, Florida faced significant democratic challenges, including record voter intimidation at the polls. Reports of harassment and misinformation created a climate of fear and confusion. These incidents highlight the urgent need to protect and expand access to voting, a cornerstone of our democracy.

Stepping into the role of the president at the beginning of September was a daunting task. In spite of my previous years of serving on the Board of Directors for the League of Women Voters Miami-Dade, I was not sure I was ready. It has been a whirlwind and I am excited to share what the League has been doing to help prepare voters for the general election and get them out to the polls.

This September, we are thrilled to highlight two key events: the empowering "Our Bodies, Our Lives" rally on September 14th and the engaging "We Met at a Local News Forum" on September 18th. These events are vital for our community's engagement and education, providing platforms to discuss crucial issues and mobilize voters as we head towards the November elections.

In May, the League has been active in promoting critical issues affecting our community.
On May 18, we participated in a panel at Books and Books with Pastor Laurie from the Coral Gables Congregational Church. We discussed Florida's 6-week abortion ban and the upcoming referendum in November, which, if passed, would extend it to 24 weeks—aligning more closely with medical recommendations. This discussion underscored the importance of protecting voting access, a fundamental right we must all safeguard.
