The League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County supports and will take action, on current local, state and national policies and issues as stated in our positions.

The following are our 2023-2024 Priorities approved by our membership at the League's Annual Meeting.

    • Conduct voter registration drives and Get Out The Vote activities throughout the county in a variety of settings and venues and in collaboration with community partners to help optimize reach and effectiveness, with a special emphasis on youth and first-time voters.

    • Inform the electorate on candidates and issues in any local Elections by producing Voter Guides and hosting Candidate Forums and De-Code the Ballot Workshops, and other voter engagement activities.

    • Partner with community organizations throughout the county to inform and engage voters in under-served communities and populations with a special emphasis on youth, returning, and first-time voters.

    • Advocate to increase voters' access to the polls, including expanding early voting, automatic and improved online voter registration.

    • Support the Constitutional Amendment Initiative Petition that limits government interference with abortion.

    • Protect the voting rights of the voting citizens of Miami-Dade County and their ability to participate in every election despite legislative changes, particularly from S.B. 7050.

    • Continue ongoing efforts to make the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners and other elected officials more transparent, open, and responsive to citizens' voices and concerns.

    • Work closely with fellow LWV chapters around the state to advance the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

    • Support local initiatives to reduce the influence of money in politics.

    • Support Local Rule and efforts to stop preemption by the state government.

    • Continue to advocate for and actively support adequate funding for Miami-Dade County Libraries.

    • Support policies and initiatives to aid and uplift all marginalized communities, such as LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities, especially regarding voter engagement and access.

    • Advocate and support programs and policies to enhance the availability of child care to working women and families, and to enhance the quality of life for working women.

    • Support the policies and initiatives of our local Divest/Invest Coalition on reimagining community safety and thoughtful police reform in Miami-Dade County.

    • Support the safe rescue and rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking, and efforts to raise public awareness and understanding of the issue.

    • Prioritize advocacy related to adding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to Miami-Dade County's Charter.

    • Support initiatives to eliminate income inequality and recommendations focused on a living wage and pay equality for women.

    • Support safe and affordable housing and economic development efforts that assist Miami-Dade County residents and small businesses.

    • Support an equitable recovery policy for essential, frontline, and low-wage workers, especially amid inflation and abuse experienced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as minority-/women - owned small businesses.

    • Support comprehensive immigration reform.

    • Support efforts to protect Miami-Dade’s diverse multicultural population from repression and intimidation.

    • Work for humane treatment of detained immigrants and refugees in our community.

    • Support full citizenship and civic education efforts for New Americans and Aspiring Americans.

    • Advocate for immigrants under the age of 18 to have access to public education.

    • Support efforts against the exploitation of undocumented immigrants.

    • Advocate for Medicaid expansion that provides insurance opportunities to lower-income Floridians.

    • Monitor healthcare delivery issues in Miami-Dade County, specifically issues impacting the Jackson Health System.

    • Advocate for the fair treatment of the mentally ill in Miami-Dade County jails and the completion of the approved and funded facility to adequately house them.

    • Advocate for women’s reproductive health in light of abortion bans, and prioritize life-saving care for pregnant persons, even if termination of pregnancy is required outside of ban limits.

    • Monitor implementation and activities relating to the Miami Forever Bond, EPA’s Consent Decree with Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department, and PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) in Miami-Dade County.

    • Support and take action on climate change issues, sea level rise, aquifer protection, solar energy expansion, water resources management, Urban Development Boundary, management, and land use and development in the county.

    • Advocate for local climate-resilience planning, policy development, and funding to equitably reflect the needs of all residents and support organizations, networks, and emerging initiatives that lead on these issues.

    • Support gun-safety measures including a ban on all semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines, improved background checks, and protection of victims of domestic violence.

    • Support local municipalities in their lawsuit regarding the state’s preemption law on gun control.

    • Support anti-gun violence initiatives, including advocating against new legislation for permitless carry in the State of Florida, particularly in high-risk communities.

    • Advocate for workable school safety regulations and practices to protect students, faculty, and staff.

    • Support adequate funding of K-12 and Early Childhood Education.

    • Coordinate with LWVFL to safeguard public education in our region and state.

    • Monitor the implementation of projects resulting from the League-support School Bond.

  • MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND VISIBILITY

    • Continue to develop projects and activities that increase membership and membership participation.

    • Expand network of community partners and collaborative outreach initiatives to facilitate novel and innovative approaches to engaging voters and advocating for key policy goals.

    • Continue improving communication and outreach through our website and social media.

    • Work to ensure that our leadership and membership reflect the rich diversity of our community.

    OUTREACH AND EDUCATION

    • Educate and raise public awareness on League issues and increase League visibility.

    • Expand the LWVFL Fellows Program to develop new ways to engage young voters and to help students develop the skills to become future community leaders.

    STATE AND NATIONAL ADVOCACY

    • Participate in state and national training, programs and advocacy efforts.

    • Support the positions adopted by the League of Women Voters US and the League of Women Voters of Florida.
