LWVMD Program 2016-17

The League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County supports, and will take action, on current local, state and national policies and issues as stated in our positions. The following 2016-17 program was adopted by the membership at the League's Annual Meeting on Saturday, June 25, 2016. 

Economic Growth

  • Support income inequality initiatives and recommendations focused on lifting low-wage workers
     
  • Monitor economic development plans for Miami-Dade County - specifically proposals by One Community One Goal

EDUCATION

  • Support adequate funding of K-12 and Early Childhood Education
     
  • Develop additional partnership for participation in voter registration events in high schools
     
  • Monitor implementation of projects resulting from the League supported School Bond

ENVIRONMENT/Resiliency

  • Monitor the activities relating to the EPA’s Consent Decree with Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department and support initiatives to include sea level rise as part of its implementation
     
  • Support and take action on current positions, water resources management, Urban Development Boundary and managed land and development growth in the County
     
  • Support the implementation of PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) in Miami-Dade County
     
  • Support sustainability and resiliency issues, including a comprehensive statewide energy and water policy
     
  • Support the recommendations of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Compact and 100 Resilient Cities Greater Miami and Beaches
     
  • Advocate for local climate-resilience planning, policy development and funding to equitably reflect the needs of all residents, and supporting the Resilient Miami network

HEALTHCARE

  • Advocate for Medicaid expansion that provides insurance opportunity to over 1 million Floridians
     
  • Monitor health care delivery issues in Miami-Dade County - specifically issues impacting Jackson Memorial Hospital
     
  • Advocate for the fair treatment of the mentally ill in Miami-Dade County jails and the completion of the facility to adequately house them that has been approved and funded.

Immigration

  • Support comprehensive immigration reform

International Relations

  • Support initiatives that would bring women leaders to Miami to promote democracy initiatives
     
  • Support people-to-people exchange and Global Democracy Initiatives

LOCAL & STATE GOVERNMENT

  • Continue to advocate for and actively support adequate funding for Miami-Dade County Libraries
     
  • Support Charter Amendment to revert county’s form of government from strong mayor to council manager, in accordance with our position on the issue
     
  • Support dedicated funding and community based plan for comprehensive public transportation system that includes bus, rail and local transportation expansion
     
  • Monitor the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners
     
  • Monitor state legislation impacting tax reform and insurance
     
  • Support local initiatives to reduce the influence of money in politics
     
  • Advocate for transparency and openness
     
  • Support and take action on current positions

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH & VISIBILITY

  • Continue to develop projects that increase membership
     
  • Continue enhancement of communication and outreach: website, Facebook, and other social media

OUTREACH & EDUCATION

  • Develop a Speakers Bureau to educate and raise the public awareness on league issues, increase league visibility, recruit new members and raise funds
     
  • Implement a leadership program designed to offer specialized training to help students, young professionals and others to develop the skills to become future community leaders
     
  • Expand community partnerships, use of media and outreach

SOCIAL POLICY

  • Support the safe rescue and rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking, and educating the public
     
  • Advocate and support program to enhance availability of child care to working women
     
  • Support activities and policies that enhance the quality of life of working women

VOTER SERVICES

  • Promote the civic engagement of young people in Miami-Dade
     
  • Conduct voter registration throughout the County
     
  • Produce a Voter Guide on the 2016 local Candidates and Issues
     
  • Conduct Candidate’s Forum and host a debate for the 2016 Miami-Dade County Mayoral race
