Florida House District 114 Special Election candidates Liz de las Cuevas (No Party Affiliation) and Javier Fernandez (Democrat) talked with area voters on April 17.

Florida House District 114 Special Election candidates Liz de las Cuevas (No Party Affiliation) and Javier Fernandez (Democrat) talked with area voters on April 17.

According to League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County (LWVMD) President Susan Windmiller, the Candidate Forum for the Special Election for Florida House of Representatives District 114 on April 17, 2018 provided a great opportunity for voters to meet the candidates in person and hear from them directly on the issues for this district.

LWVMD thanks candidates Liz de las Cuevas (No Party Affiliation) and Javier Fernandez (Democrat) for their active participation in the forum and thoughtful response to the League's published Voter Guide. Questions posed by attendees at the public event covered a wide variety of topics, including integrity and trust of public officials, gun safety, climate change, transportation, support of public education, affordable housing, elected Sheriff and Home Rule authority, and much more.  Voters could contrast candidates and their positions so they can make an informed voting decision.

It was a loss for the voters and our democratic process that Andrew Vargas, the Republican candidate, chose not to respond to the LWVMD voter guide questionnaire or our invitation to the forum, despite our numerous attempts to contact Mr. Vargas and his campaign.

To learn more about the candidates' positions, see their responses to the LWVMD Voter Guide questionnaire for District 114.
