As the holiday season and the end of 2017 draw near, it's the perfect time to reflect on and celebrate the accomplishments of the League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County over the past year.
Locally, the LWVMD has led on the issues that affect our lives, such as supporting public education, working to restore the voting rights of 1.6 million disenfranchised Floridians through a 2018 ballot initiative, holding candidate forums in Special Elections, advocating for solar energy, and calling on our legislators to demand action on gun safety.
We have doubled our membership and engaged members by offering different ways to get involved through social media outreach, action alerts, and education and advocacy events.
We have doubled our donor base and financial support through Give Miami Day.
We expanded our Women That Shine Event by creating the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year we honored Ruth Shack, for her landmark sponsorship of the Human Rights Ordinance, transforming the Dade Community Foundation into the Miami Foundation, and always being a strong advocate, consistent with the League of Women Voters core value of advocacy.
We have added more general membership meetings, including the Legislative Briefing and Brunch, to be held on January 20, 2018, to prepare for the Florida legislative session.
I am thrilled to announce that we will be creating a 2018 Election Action Team for next year's election. Team members will publish voter guides on candidates and their positions, register voters, educate voters on voting deadlines, conduct decode-the-ballot workshops, and coordinate with our many partners to GOTV (Get Out The Vote).
The 2018 elections will have a significant impact on our local, state, and national legislators as well as State Constitutional Amendments and County Charter Amendments. The League will be working hard to ensure that Miami-Dade voters have the information they need to make informed decisions when they cast their ballot.
Thank you all for your contributions as members, board members, supporters, volunteers, and partners. Together, we are empowering voters and defending democracy. In this crucial election year, it's all hands on deck.
Wishing you very happy holidays and all good things in the new year. Remember, the world is run by those who show up -- and we look forward to seeing you in 2018!
