In 2011, the Department of Justice initiated an investigation against the City of Miami for its police officers’ use of deadly force. In 2016, the Department of Justice, the City of Miami, and the Miami Police Department signed a settlement agreement as a result of that investigation. Part of the settlement agreement required the creation of an independent Community Advisory Board to provide oversight and feedback on policies and practices regarding the Miami Police Department’s use of deadly force.
